How Instagram celebrated International Dylan Thomas Day 2017

May 14 2017 marked the third International Dylan Thomas Day, an annual day of celebration on the anniversary of the first ever stage production of Dylan Thomas’s best known work, Under Milk Wood.

Each year, users of social media are encouraged to share Dylan Thomas inspired content using the hashtag #DylanDay, and 2017 was the first year when we asked Instagram users to get involved. Here are some of the highlights.

Ballad of the Long-legged Bait, witchy socks, distant dog asleep in the grass. Happy #dylanday !!

Knitted nip! || Just found out that today is Dylan Thomas Day and this knitted character from 'Under Milk Wood' is obviously up for it. I don't think I've ever seen a knitted nipple before! Also I've never read or heard the play so I think it's a must now. And a visit to the awesome Tin Shed Experience is also a must for anyone in Laugharne . . . . . . #dylanthomas #dylanthomasday #tinshed #laugharne #wales #wales❤️ #walescoast #walesonline #welsh #poetry #poetrycommunity #poetsofinstagram #poems #museum #history #cmyru #carmarthenshire #pembroke #travel #worldnomads #traveling #instatrip #instatravel #literary #travelgram #travelphotography #traveller #instabritain #findyourepic @tinshedexperience #discovercymru

Jeff Towns, Swansea Book Seller, "The Dylan Thomas Guy" #DylanDay #SwanseaIsCulture "My Mother was Welsh. I went to college in Cardiff. When I arrived in Swansea though I thought it was beautiful and I decided to stay. I’ve been here for 50 years. I couldn’t get a job as a teacher so I decided to open a book store. There was nothing of Dylan Thomas in Swansea back then in the 70’s so I called it “Dylan"s Bookstore”. Lots of eccentrics and people come through my door. I’ve even sold Dylan Thomas books to two US presidents, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton". #DylanThomas #Dylansstore #Swansea #poets #poetry #writers #Swansea2021 'Doeddwn i ddim yn gallu cael swydd fel athro, felly penderfynais agor siop lyfrau.Doedd dim byd am Dylan Thomas yn Abertawe yn ôl bryd hynny yn y 70au, felly galwais y siop yn "Dylans Bookstore". Mae llawer o bobl echreiddig yn cerdded drwy'r drws. Rwyf hyd yn oed wedi gwerthu llyfrau am Dylan Thomas i lywyddion UDA, Jimmy Carter a Bill Clinton.'

Yesterday's wonderful #dylanday at @dylanthomasbirthplace culminated in the visit of Michael Portillo, who is currently filming a new series of his popular 'Great British Railway Journeys' which we are told is due to air in January next year. Michael wrote in the guest book… "I am very moved and impressed by this admirable restoration of the Thomas house. It opened my eyes to the life they lived here and where Dylan wrote so much of his work." It really was a great occasion at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive as we joined in the global celebrations for #dylanday We hosted a range of wonderful people all coming together to celebrate our 'man of words' in a variety of contrasting events. Thanks to the Lighthouse Theatre Ltd, Hamish Wilson, Bill Bytheway, the Dept. of Languages Translation & Interpreting and Research Institute for Arts and Humanities at @swanseauni. And of course we can't forget our volunteers Clive Gully & Clive Giles too, such a great help. #michaelportillo #greatbritishrailwayjourneys #greatbritishrailways #tv #television #filming #event #dylanthomas #5cwmdonkin #dylans #swansea #mumbles #gower #visitswanseabay #enjoyswanseabay #wales #poetry #poet #quote #writing #literature #art #culture #fun #unique #history #yearoflegends #inspiration #imagination
